Get your reading nerd on with this cute summer reading challenge I put together. Plus, I’ve included a couple of recommendations for each category; however, this is your challenge, so do with it what you like!

Some of the links below are affiliate links, meaning that at no additional cost to you, I will receive a commission if you click through and make a purchase.

Read a Book with an Ocean Theme or Ocean in the Title 🌊:

Think, do you want windswept or horror! This theme leaves your book selection wide open!

The Awakening by Kate Chopin

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

Recommendations: “WhaleFall” by Daniel Kraus promises to be mysterious and suspenseful far below the depths or “The Deep” by Nick Cutter is filled with gore and takes a terrifying turn while deep in the Pacific Ocean. No? Maybe you crave a classic such as “The Awakening” by Kate Chopin? but be prepared with a few tissues for that one.

Select a Book with a Summer Romance 💕:

Obviously, “The Summer I Turned Pretty” by Jenny Han or “When Katie Met Cassidy” by Camille Perri come to mind, which I haven’t read either yet so let me know! Modern romance isn’t my go-to so I do not have a ton of recommendations and I’m stepping outside my comfort zone with this category!

Sea Creature Character 🐙🧜‍♀️:

Of course! “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt is going to be the hands-down winner in this category, but you could also dive deeper with “WhaleFall” by Daniel Kraus, or the hilariously inappropriate “Tallulah’s Temptation” (Sea Shenanigans #1) by Robyn Peterman, which I just read and it is literally the best beach read! Highly suggest it if you want something ridiculous.

A Pirate Adventure or Any Adventure Book 🏴‍☠️:

Again, “Tallulah’s Temptation” (Sea Shenanigans #1) by Robyn Peterman could also work for this category but be warned it is for mamas who don’t mind an occasional curse like sh*t or balls. You could also go classic and read “Treasure Island” by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Ocean or Island Survival Story 🏝️:

A great suggestion in this category is “Life of Pi” by Yann Martel! Amazing book! You could go a different route and do something like “The Grace Year” by Kim Liggett, which was also fantastic, or go full gore with “The Troop” by Nick Cutter.

Small Beach Town Theme or Lake House 🏖️:

I haven’t read this one but it looks decent “The Lighthouse Keeper” (Starlight Cove #1) by Cynthia Ellingsen. It fits the profile, however, this category really includes so many book choices!

Summer Road Trip or RT of Any Kind 🚗:

I would include “Eat Pray Love” by Elizabeth Gilbert or “Into the Wild” by Jon Krakauer within this category, which are both nonfiction but maybe you prefer something fiction like “Paper Towns” by John Green?

Summer Vacation 🌞:

Obviously! “People We Meet on Vacation” by Emily Henry, “The Unhoneymooners” by Christina Lauren, and “Our Italian Summer” by Jennifer Probst come to mind, but if you want something a little more dark and obscure try “The Ruins” by Scott Smith!
