Yearning for answers in her parent’s death, Inez sails to Cairo, bringing her sketch pads and an ancient golden ring her father sent to her for safekeeping before he died.

My Review

This book is my current book club pick and I am beyond excited for this Egyptian adventure. Review coming soon.

At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities by Heather Webber

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

A mysterious letter. An offer taken. And the chance to move forward.

About The Book: When Ava Harrison receives a letter containing an unusual job listing one month after the sudden death of her ex-boyfriend, she thinks she’s being haunted. The listing—a job as a live-in caretaker for a peculiar old man and his cranky cat in Driftwood, Alabama—is the perfect chance to start a new life.

My Review, 4 Stars

A warm-hearted book about grief. Follow Ava as she escapes her illness to step outside her comfort zone and follow the instructions for a job offer she received in a mysterious letter.

In the life of Maggie who is trying to keep her mother’s coffee shop afloat while worrying herself sick! Literally! Worrying about the health of her dad. Maggie, who lost her mother years ago to the sea but still expects her miraculous return.
How will these quirky characters and neighbors cope?
With one cute request for a matcha with chia and lavender and one grumpy cat, you will easily be swept up in this story about this charming coastal town. Maggie’s curiosities were the icing on the cake.

My one complaint? It reads a little YA.

The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:  A female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them – setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course.

My Review, 4 Stars

A story surrounding a mysterious apothecary shop that specializes in poisons, which it sells to women for use on oppressive men. How much better can it get? I mean, really?

I really enjoyed this book and not just because the cover is so beautiful! I loved the characters and following each story through time. It is much more than just another woman scorned. This is a story of women supporting women through time and with an added mystery of magic which is perfect for fall. I adored the ending. I loved how it’s open to a little interpretation. I’d like to think there was some magic at hand. I’d definitely recommend it as a fun and quick read!

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:  The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel.

My Review, 4 Stars

This is not the PG-13 movie version. This dark and winding tale of sisterly bond is more than its movie counterpart. The book is a bit more vulgar and racy. The earthy tones of this witchy story will have you wanting more, which is perfect because there is a second, third, and fourth book in the series!

The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:  The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel.

My Review

I’ve only just finished Practical Magic and am looking forward to this next book in the series so I will update my review once I devour it! But I have heard this series gets even more tasty as it goes on.

Magic Lessons by Alice Hoffman

In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic

My Review

I’ve listed these books in the order that they were written (Practical MagicThe Rules of MagicMagic LessonsThe Book of Magic) but you can also read them in chronological order (Magic LessonsThe Rules of MagicPractical MagicThe Book of Magic). It’s up to you!

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow

My Review, 5 Stars

Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance by Ruth Emmie Lang

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book: Orphaned, raised by wolves, and the proud owner of a horned pig named Merlin, Weylyn Grey knew he wasn’t like other people. But when he single-handedly stopped that tornado on a stormy Christmas day in Oklahoma, he realized just how different he actually was.

That tornado was the first of many strange events that seem to follow Weylyn from town to town, although he doesn’t like to take credit. As amazing as these powers may appear, they tend to manifest themselves at inopportune times and places. From freak storms to trees that appear to grow overnight, Weylyn’s unique abilities are a curiosity at best and at worst, a danger to himself and the woman he loves. But Mary doesn’t care. Since Weylyn saved her from an angry wolf on her eleventh birthday, she’s known that a relationship with him isn’t without its risks, but as anyone who’s met Weylyn will tell you, once he wanders into your life, you’ll wish he’d never leave.

My Review, 5 Stars

I actually won this book for free on Goodreads Giveaways a million years ago and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It is obscure and not mainstream or popular. No one is talking about this book. It is a hidden gem. It is intriguing from the first page. Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance is a love story and is filled with magical realism. It is full of wonder. This book is an absolute delight. I loved every minute and I couldn’t put it down.

The Librarian of Crooked Lane by C.J. Archer

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:  A librarian with a mysterious past, a war hero with a secret, and the heist of a magic painting. Librarian Sylvia Ashe knows nothing about her past, having grown up without a father and a mother who refused to discuss him. When she stumbles upon a diary that suggests she’s descended from magicians, she’s skeptical. After all, magicians are special, and she’s just an ordinary girl who loves books.

My Review 4 Stars

This book was part historical fiction with some magical realism, mystery, and a bit of romance. It takes place in the 1920s and has a different spin on what it means to be a “magician”. I read this book rather quickly because I was intrigued and wanted to know more about these magicians and Gabe. It really does not give much away because of course there is another book in the series and what fun would that be? I guess I need to read the next book to discover what happens next.

Weyward by Emilia Hart

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:  Weaving together the stories of three extraordinary women across five centuries.

My Review, 4 Stars

If you like a story about nosey neighbors and women overcoming abuse this might be your next favorite book! Women saving women and all intertwined with magic.

Women supporting women through all dimensions and centuries. Violet makes new friends and uncovers some familial secrets about her past. It’s well worth it.

The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book:

Years ago, a reclusive mega-bestselling children’s author quit writing under mysterious circumstances. Suddenly he resurfaces with a brand-new book and a one-of-a-kind competition, offering a prize that will change the winner’s life in this absorbing and whimsical novel.

Make a wish. . . .

My Review, 5 Stars

I wasn’t expecting something SO good. I was sort of expecting The Midnight Library but this is so much better. A book for book lovers and for lovers of fairytales and children’s stories. This book is filled with warmth.

I do not even like riddles but this story gave me a new perspective. Lucy is a mess and she doesn’t have all her ducks in a row but she knows she loves Christopher and they both love The Clock Island series and Jack The Mastermind. So she accepts an invite to Clock Island to compete for a prize in the hopes of earning enough money to adopt Christopher.

This story is soft, comforting, and enchanting while also being thoughtworthy.

Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book: On a dark midwinter’s night in an ancient inn on the river Thames, an extraordinary event takes place. The regulars are telling stories to while away the dark hours, when the door bursts open on a grievously wounded stranger.

In his arms is the lifeless body of a small child. Hours later, the girl stirs, takes a breath, and returns to life. Is it a miracle? Is it magic? Or can science provide an explanation? These questions have many answers, some of them quite dark indeed.

My Review, 5 Stars

Where to start!? Best book I’ve read in a of couple years at least. There are so many rich components and mysterious characters and they all interwind like how creeks interwind with rivers. I am a person who has waterlust. Water calls to me and all things water fascinate and amaze me.

I was absolutely spellbound by the story. I was never bored for one second and had to calm myself not to read too quickly because I wanted to cherish the story and not miss anything. I adored the little girl so mysterious that she seemed birthed by the river itself.

This is one enchanting book filled with folklore and mystery that will keep you turning pages till the end.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book: Somewhere out beyond the edge of the universe there is a library that contains an infinite number of books, each one the story of another reality. One tells the story of your life as it is, along with another book for the other life you could have lived if you had made a different choice at any point in your life.

My Review, 4 Stars

It felt a little YA for me to really really love it. I liked the idea of the midnight library but I did get a little bored with all the variations of lives. I thought some parts were funny but mostly I think this book has a great message. We are filled with unlimited possibilities.

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber

purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon

About The Book: Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café. As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

My Review, 4 Stars

This is a great feel good book! If you want something cute and uplifting this is it.
Follow Anna to her roots at the Blackbird Cafe and discover the secret messages the birds deliver in their own unique way.
