The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: A female apothecary secretly dispenses poisons to liberate women from the men who have wronged them – setting three lives across centuries on a dangerous collision course.
My Review, 4 Stars
A story surrounding a mysterious apothecary shop that specializes in poisons, which it sells to women for use on oppressive men. How much better can it get? I mean, really?
I really enjoyed this book and not just because the cover is so beautiful! I loved the characters and following each story through time. It is much more than just another woman scorned. This is a story of women supporting women through time and with an added mystery of magic. I adored the ending. I loved how it’s open to a little interpretation. I’d like to think there was some magic at hand. I’d definitely recommend it as a fun and quick read!

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: The story of a boy born to a teenage single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival.
In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.
Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damage to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration.
My Review, 5 Stars
I’ve never read Barbara Kingsolver before but now I’m on the train and I’ll definitely be reading more. The art on the cover attracted me to the book. This book was excellent. It hits hard, it goes in-depth and it is one of those books you remember for life.
You can’t help but fall in love with Demon. I will say it did take a few chapters for me to become completely invested and I did appreciate his childhood story more than his coming into adulthood. This book gives you the real tragedies that occur during the foster care system, poverty, and drug addiction. It is more centered around a rural environment and hits in child labor plus so much more. It’s not just a great book it is an important read.
I am in love with Barbara’s blunt writing style. It’s amazing and I look forward to reading my next book by her.

Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: As a biracial, unenrolled tribal member and the product of a scandal, Daunis Fontaine has never quite fit in—both in her hometown and on the nearby Ojibwe reservation. When her family is struck by tragedy, Daunis puts her dreams on hold to care for her fragile mother. The only bright spot is meeting Jamie, the charming new recruit on her brother’s hockey team.
My Review, 5 Stars
The cover, wow. This book is YA but hits on some deep and important heavy topics. Colorism, rape, injustice, culture, community, and drugs. It feels like the author’s story.
Follow Daunis while she navigates her life. Excluded by not being an enrolled member of the tribe but not knowing much else.
Her losses are unbelievable. She is torn by the illness of her grandma and the sudden loss of her uncle but it does not end there. You follow her as she evolves her maturity through bad experiences and while she tries to uncover the mysteries surrounding drugs within her tribe.
This story has it all and while at times it felt very YA other times it didn’t at all. Definitely 5 stars!

The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: Había una vez . . .There lived a girl named Petra Peña, who wanted nothing more than to be a storyteller, like her abuelita.
But Petra’s world is ending. Earth has been destroyed by a comet, and only a few hundred scientists and their children – among them Petra and her family – have been chosen to journey to a new planet. They are the ones who must carry on the human race.
My Review, 4 Stars
The cover is such a piece of art and the story is great too. It reads as YA. It also has some sci-fi aspects which aren’t normally my cup of tea but this book surprised me in a good way.
It was a really interesting experience. It kept me on my toes wanting more all the way to the end and when it ended it was a bit abrupt I wanted more from the end.
The characters are so likable and the book is founded on a tragedy. I loved the storytelling entwined with the Mexican culture and I loved how Petra made the stories her own.

The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: The true story of a couple who lost everything and embarked on a transformative journey walking the South West Coast Path in England.
My Review, 3 Stars
The cover really awed me but the book fell flat for me. I feel like this might be one of those books that I might have enjoyed more if I were in a different mood. I did want to still include it on my list because I know every person has different tastes. If you loved Wild by Cheryl Strayed you will probably like this book. The book to me was very repetitive but it did have great moments and I liked the characters.

The One Hundred Years of Lenni and Margot by Marianna Cronin
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: Life is short – no one knows that better than 17 year-old Lenni Petterssen. On the Terminal ward, the nurses are offering their condolences already, but Lenni still has plenty of living to do.
My Review, 5 Stars
This book is much much more than just a gorgeous cover. It is an epic story.
A tender but funny story which is important and if you are someone who wants a story about the end, grief, or death this one does it well.
There is so much we don’t know. This story will make you laugh and pull at your heartstrings. You’ll never forget Lenni and Margot! I highly recommend this book to everyone. Go ahead and fall right in love with the characters. I think every reader will enjoy this one.

The House in The Cerulean Sea by TJ Klune
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: Linus Baker leads a quiet, solitary life. At forty, he lives in a tiny house with a devious cat and his old records. As a Case Worker at the Department in Charge Of Magical Youth, he spends his days overseeing the well-being of magical children in government-sanctioned orphanages.
My Review, 4 Stars
A fun cover and a fun book. Filled with funny moments and magic! Definitely an adventure worth taking. I think at times it’s a tiny bit repetitive but overall I loved it and I loved all the characters, especially Talia and Chauncey! It is just a cute, sweet story. Love is love and this book was pretty great.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.
Suddenly forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middle-class existence. Instantly transformed into migrants. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?
My Review, 5 Stars
A book that is not just a pretty cover. I’m surprised and impressed with myself for getting through this book because it is so truly horrifyingly dear to my heart. It is an almost fatal wound that has attached itself to my heart and when I read things like this it scratches the very transparent & tender surface of that scab and it bleeds red.
I won’t say much about this book but there is nothing fiction about this book except the names of the characters and everyone in the US should read it.

Untamed by Glennon Doyle
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: Soulful and uproarious, forceful and tender, Untamed is both an intimate memoir and a galvanizing wake-up call. It is the story of how one woman learned that a responsible mother is not one who slowly dies for her children, but one who shows them how to fully live.
My Review, 4 Stars
“Shouldn’t my marriage feel more loving than this? Shouldn’t my religion be more alive and kind than this? Shouldn’t my work be more meaningful and my community be more connected? Shouldn’t the world I’m leaving to my babies be less brutal? Isn’t it all just supposed to be more beautiful than this?”
If these are some questions that you have about life maybe reading this book will guide you to a tiny little bit of enlightenment. It doesn’t have all the answers but it does help you to look inside of yourself a little bit more than you did before.

The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: A charming, clever, and quietly moving debut novel of endless possibilities and joyful discoveries that explores the promises we make and break, losing and finding ourselves, the objects that hold magic and meaning for our lives, and the surprising connections that bind us.
My Review, 5 Stars
An amazing timeless love story for the ages. Anthony loses the thing most precious to him.. twice.. he then becomes The Keeper of Lost Things. He feels if he can even bring one lost item back to a person who is truly missing it then he won’t feel so bad over his own loss.
This book hooked me pretty quickly but I did get lost for a short time with all of the different characters and small inserts of stories from the missing items. However, if you stick with it, it will pay off in the end.

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow
purchase the Kindle, paperback, or hardcover on Amazon
About The Book: In the early 1900s, a young woman searches for her place in the world after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut. In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself.

Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure, and danger.
My Review, 5 Stars
I absolutely adored this book. It has stuck with me for years. The story is magic and it is beautifully written. If you love books I know you will cherish this one as much as I did. Plus the cover! Wow!
