This outdoor desert adventure is great for couples or families with kids. Just know staying in a yurt is similar to camping. Dead Horse Point State Park is filled with fun hiking trails, amazing cliff overlooks, beautiful desert views, wildlife, and other fun things to do such as mountain biking. Also, southern Utah remains one of the last refuges for dark skies with no light pollution. Let’s cover some basics so you are ready to book your overnight stay.

Wingate Yurts

If you want to observe the night sky in style learn here how to book your stay in a yurt in the deserts of southern Utah. The Yurts have to be booked in advance and for at least 2 nights.

The yurts are conveniently located in the heart of the park and the Wingate campground. They can comfortably sleep up to 6 people however bedding is not provided so pack your sleeping bag.

Each yurt has an outdoor grill and the park will provide the propane. Fires are also permitted in the fire pits but you will need to bring firewood because you cannot collect firewood from the ground. Don’t forget your camping chairs!

The yurts are $ 150.00 a night but you will need to confirm prices on the website before booking because they can change depending on season. When booking your yurt you will receive an email with the door entry code. There is also an additional fee for more than one car.

There are both heating and air conditioning in each yurt but be sure to conserve energy when you are not in your yurt.

Pets unfortunately are not allowed in the Winegate Yurts or the yurt area but they are allowed in the Moenkopi Yurts. If you do book a pet-friendly yurt be sure to pick up after your pet inside and outside.

You can book yurts at Dead Horse Point State Park in two different campgrounds. The Wingate Yurts and The Moenkopi Yurts. You will need to type which yurts you are interested in when booking online. Your yurt does need to be cleaned out before departing. Don’t be discouraged by the rules this is a great and friendly place to stay!

Hiking Trails in Dead Horse Point State Park

While your overnight stay in a yurt is sure to be an amazing experience there are also a lot of fun things to do inside the park. There are several miles of hiking trails that navigate around the majestic desert landscapes. Strap on your hiking boots and hit the red sand.

The Visitor Center Nature Trail highlights desert plants and trees while offering views of the Lasal Mountains and Chimney Rock. Don’t miss the fun trail-side exhibits on your trek. This trail is classified as easy and is about 200 meters.

The West Rim Trail System is the longest hiking trail at Dead Horse Point State Park. The trail does cross over sandstone which can be slippery and the trail is marked with stones that are stacked up. The trail heads to many overlooks and is 2.5 miles one way. It is classified as moderate. I would recommend heading to The Neck Overlook for views of the Colorado River.

Mountain Biking

If desert biking is your thing then this travel adventure just might be perfect for you. There are bike rentals available.

The Intrepid Mountian Biking Trail offers over 16 miles of biking trails. Bike over a diverse terrain while enjoying canyon views. According to the park service biking trails vary from moderate to intermediate and can be enjoyed by beginners, families, and expert riders.

Stargazing

Utah’s backcountry is gorgeous and is a prime spot for observing the night sky without light pollution. See into another dimension. Dead Horse Point State Park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park and is one of the best areas to stargaze in the Moab area. The park regularly hosts night sky events such as moonlit walks or celestial events.
